A Staggering Outlook on the Current Effects of Deforestation

     Deforestation is killing the earth in more ways than one. This is truly a global threat.                
           
            It’s happening right now, somewhere in the world, as you read this: deforestation. Forest loss is a major issue across the globe today and the effects of it have only just begun. We do not appreciate the environmental balance forests provide. Forests control precipitation patterns, absorb CO2, and allow for greater biodiversity –yet, deforestation has increased with weaker regulations and popular demand for products such as those produced from Palm oil.
            Indeed, forests are directly involved in delivering dependable precipitation. Trees draw up water from the soil and transpire it into the atmosphere. The Amazon rainforest transpires 20 billion tons of water every day. Water in the atmosphere exhibits “biotic pumping” by creating a low pressure system that pumps moisture from the ocean inland. Deforestation damages this system and shuts down the “pump.” In Brazil, this has led to widespread drought. However, it doesn’t stop there--deforestation in the Amazon could potentially cause droughts in places like California, as Texas and New Mexico are already experiencing increased droughts. Changing the water cycle enough in the Amazon could shift global weather patterns, which in turn would lead to climate instability.
            Additionally, if deforestation continues at its current rate, over 100 gigatons of carbon dioxide will be released into the atmosphere by 2050. Normally, forests act as carbon sinks by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen to purify our air. K Valentine cites a study that suggests putting a price on carbon to cut the rate of deforestation and benefit the climate. It is a relatively low-cost method of reducing overall emissions for countries--especially if wealthier countries paid tropical countries not to cut trees.
            Deforestation is destroying the world’s biodiversity. Take, for instance, the orangutan whose numbers were 230,000 a hundred years ago. Today, less than 50,000 remain due to forest loss in Southeast Asia. In 25 years orangutans could be an extinct species in the wild as their survival is wholly dependent on the fate of the rainforests.
            When compared with undisturbed forests, those that are disturbed have a strong loss in biodiversity. The lower species diversity in disturbed locations does suggest that many species can only inhabit pristine locations. Interestingly, some disturbed forests can still maintain 80% of the species that are in undisturbed forests--certainly a hopeful discovery. It is crucial that forest reserves be spread out in a network, rather than in one small region. This prevents species from going regionally extinct. Thus, isolated reserves as well as private land already disturbed must be conserved.
            Sadly, the Brazilian Amazon actually experienced a 16% increase in forest loss from August 2014 to August 2015. For almost a decade, deforestation in the region had been on a decline, then two spurts occurred in the past three years. The government’s efforts to combat loss of forest have had little effect. Yet, the government can be to blame for not enforcing regulations and allowing the construction of roads and other infrastructure projects through rainforests. A faltering economy also pressured illegal timbering and clearing of land for livestock and agriculture.
            Whether or not we have participated in cutting down forests, we are still influencing it in many of the products we purchase. Palm oil has become a $44 billion-a-year industry and is the number one cause of forest loss in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries. Palm oil and its derivatives can be found in thousands of products sold across the world--in fact more than half of consumer goods. Unfortunately, since 1990 its consumption has quintupled and its demand is only growing. The U.S. and Europe are among the top consumers. Every hour 300 football fields of rainforest are cleared for palm oil plantations. There is certainly no slowing this industry anytime soon, so the future of Southeast Asia’s forests seems bleak.  

            Clearly our forests are crucial to survival of mankind, wildlife, and really the entire planet. This is a global fight, so we need commitments from tropical nations to reduce greenhouse emissions from deforestation. Additionally, as individuals and consumers, we can change our buying habits and only support products produced with zero contribution to deforestation.

Less meat, less climate change?




Environmentalists all over the world have their sights set on one goal: saving our planet. However, there is not just one way to accomplish this goal. We’ve all heard the various suggestions on how to do our part in reducing our impact on climate change, such as driving an electric car, turning off our lights, and reducing our showering times, but have you ever heard that eating less meat could be more important than all of those? For instance, the amount of water used to shower for two months is equivalent to the amount of water used to produce a single hamburger: 660 gallons of water (Gillam). Convinced yet?
Damian Carrington, a writer for The Guardian, confronts us with a fact that many people are unaware of, which is that “the global livestock industry produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all cars, planes, trains, and ships combined” (Carrington). Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang conducted a study to discover the levels of “uncounted, overlooked, and misallocated livestock-related GHG emissions” and found that “51% of annual worldwide GHG emissions are caused by livestock and their byproducts.” In fact, livestock and their byproducts actually “account for at least 32,564 million tons of CO2e per year” (Goodland and Anhang). Animal agriculture also accounts for much of the deforestation and land-use occurring around the world. In fact, animal agriculture is responsible for 91% of the Amazon destruction and 45% of earth’s land is covered by livestock (Gillam).  Greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and land-use are some of the main concerns for climate change and if animal agriculture is responsible for such high amounts then obviously changes need to be made.
Meat consumption in Asia is expected to rise with a 116% increase in China and a 138% increase in India between 2006 and 2050 (Casey). This is a major concern because a growing demand for meat will result in increased greenhouse gas emissions, ultimately causing the dangerous effects of climate change to be unavoidable (Casey). If action isn’t taken to stop this increase in meat consumption, agricultural emissions could take up 100% of the carbon budget by the year 2050 (Carrington). Simply said, every other industry would have to impossibly emit no carbon in order to keep our planet from warming an extra 2 degrees.
By switching to a plant-based diet, you can reduce your carbon footprint by 50% by reducing both emissions and land-use because feeding a vegan for a year requires 18 times less land than meat eaters (Gillam).  Reducing meat consumption will not only have a positive impact on the environment, but it will also have a positive impact on human health since there are reports coming out about health issues that could be attributed to consumption of certain meats. You can help your planet and yourself by becoming more aware of your meat consumption and making a few changes.
It is safe to assume that the most effective method of avoiding this unwanted increase in emissions is to reduce meat consumption worldwide. The first step that needs to be taken is raising awareness of the impact animal agriculture has on the environment and human health. This may sound easy, but there are many barriers. Kate Irwin of The Daily Californian informs us that “many of the world’s largest and most famous nonprofit environmental organizations suppress, do not acknowledge or are ignorant of this basic truth” (Irwin). These organizations that are all about protecting the environment aren’t even addressing this problem and that is an issue. On top of that, according to Laura Wellesley of BBC News, governments aren’t addressing this environmental issue either because they fear backlash from the people and they know the public’s awareness of this issue is low so they do not feel the need to do anything (Wellesley). Despite the lack of support that this issue gets from the larger organizations and governments, many environmentalists continue to address the issue on their own. In 2014, Kip Anderson and Keegan Kuhn took it upon themselves to create a risky documentary, Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, to explore the impact that animal agriculture has on our environment and present their own solution to this environmental issue: a plant-based diet (Irwin). So, are you willing to give up some meat for the sake of the planet you live on?

Iran Becoming A Front-runner in Renewable Energy

           Not many people would believe that Iran was capable of becoming a front-runner in renewable energy, but they have changed that idea with its plans to build more solar and wind installations. In the past year, Iran and other countries have started to discuss the use of renewable energy forms instead of predominantly using fossil fuels. Approximately 94% of Iran’s electricity supply is from fossil fuels and the switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy will be beneficial for Iran’s economy (Bloomberg). The sudden switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy is due to the lightening of the sanctions that prohibited trade between western countries and Iran because these sanctions gave other governments control of Iran’s policies. Without these trade restrictions, other countries can trade with Iran and allow Iranians to have a say with who they trade with. There are already other countries, such as Denmark and India, which are already interested in investing with Iran to set up clean energy (Tasnim News). 
As of right now, Iran is the 11th largest country that contributes a significant amount of pollution.  With the lightening of the sanctions, Iran can cut its emissions by 4% by 2030.  If the sanctions were completely removed, Iran would be able to triple its efforts and cut its emissions by 12%.  Also due to the lightening of these sanctions, Iran should see an increase in wind and solar installations (see graph below).  Iran has a lot of windy ridges across the country which will be beneficial for wind installations (Bloomberg).

Iran is also constantly adding new consumers to its energy systems each year.  One article reports that 1.4 million new consumers are added each year to the electricity market.  These constant additions are causing more carbon emissions and unfortunately the current energy systems now are not efficient enough to keep up.  The poor efficiency with the infrastructures causes a huge loss to the economy (over $200 million per one per cent loss during transmission).  The addition of solar and wind installments will allow for higher efficiency and less economic loss (Albawaba).  
Iran is not the only country to get on board with using renewable energy.  Other countries have adapted greener forms of energy and hope to cut carbon emissions by 2030 or 2040.  Brazil, China, the European Union, the United States, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico will double their renewable energy efforts due to the plans discussed at the Paris global climate agreement.  However in order for these countries to cut down on carbon emissions, approximately $68 trillion will need to be invested in clean energy (Huffington Post). 
There is more change that needs to occur in order for definitive results to be seen, but the solar and wind installations in Iran are a huge step forward.  As long as other countries continue with their efforts, positive results will develop overtime.

Is This Water Sanitary?

               A catastrophe has occurred in the city of Flint Michigan. In April 2014, Flint changed its water source for its residents from Detroit and began to use the Flint River to save money (Washington Post).  When the change occurred, it was reported that there was uncertainty about the water quality. The governor assured the residents that it was a prominent water source and that the water would be tested.  Residents began complaining about the taste of the water, the smell, and the color.  It was reported that Flint switched back to getting its water from Detroit, but by then they had already been consuming the contaminated water for 19 months. There was nothing that could reverse what has been done. It was found that the Flint River had leached lead from the city’s pipes more than Detroit did.  Researchers have found children with triple the amount of lead in their blood. Lead exposure in children negatively affects IQ, ability to pay attention, and academic achievement (Switchboard). A group of Virginia Tech researchers sampled 271 Flint homes and found lead levels that meet the EPAs definition of toxic waste. They found levels as high as 13,00 parts per billion (Washington Post). 
Lead poisoning has also occurred in Nigeria in June 2010. It was first noticed as ducks were going missing or not returning to the water. High levels of lead have been found in the water in six villages in Zamfara, close to where the residents were illegally mining for gold. It was found that the lead was coming home with the miners on their clothing and in the rocks they brought home to mine for gold. The lead poisoning has killed more 160 people, 111 of them are children. The children were suffering from vomiting, abdominal pain, headaches, and seizures. An organization called The Dutch arm of Doctors Without Borders brought in drugs to treat villagers that were found to have high levels of lead in their blood. Also noting changes in animals can help provide early warnings of the presence of dangerous chemicals or diseases in the water(New York Times) .
There has been a recent invention that could help save citizens from drinking or using contaminated water. Researchers in Singapore have developed a robotic swan that collects data about water quality in an effort to efficiently monitor reservoirs (Sciencedaily). This is new technology that can be used to test the water quality and detect levels of lead. This could save lives around the world and help keep citizens safe.

Insects: A Silent Extinction

When many of us think of conservation efforts, animals like polar bears or tigers are at the top of our lists. Maybe this is because they are mammals and we can better relate to them unlike those creepy crawly insects. However, entomologists like May Berenbaum believe insects are at  a greater risk of extinction compared to other familiar taxa.

And that's a problem especially when you think about the essential roles insects play in the environment such as pollination and decomposition.

Honeybees are the iconic symbol of pollination and one of the few insects commonly cultivated by people but even they are in trouble. Many beekeepers are losing around 40-50% their bees to an unknown malady.

And while bees are essential for producing crops and honey, let's not forget about the decomposers. Stoneflies and caddisflies help to reduce the abundance of leaf litter in streams and are important prey to fish, but due to reduced riparian vegetation and increased land fertilization around streams, these aquatic insects have been reduced enough to further affect water conditions in Sweden.

Recently in Britain, dozens of insects were put on the Red List due to possibility of each species going extinct. The iridescent green tansy beetle once common in the wetlands are now endangered not only in Britain, but worldwide.

But on a positive note, a species of giant stick insects, thought extinct for 80 years, was found on Ball's Pyramid by two Australian scientists. Discovering the frass (excrement) of the stick insect, they risked their lives to find the nocturnal creature and rediscover it. However, this illustrates one of the problems of determining insect extinction or status: they are hard to find. While many of us can easily spot an elephant or a whale, insects are a different story.

The loss of insects and the impacts it has on humans just goes to show not to take the little things in life for granted.

Climate Change and the Spread of Insect-borne Disease

Insects can be vectors of disease and as temperatures rise, diseases and insects normally found in warmer climates are starting to appear in more temperate climates. Insects like mosquitoes can carry diseases such as West Nile Virus and dengue fever and are now posing a risk to the United States and have killed American citizens.

And it’s not only the United States who is as risk.

Insect-borne diseases once limited to equatorial regions have spread to southern and eastern Europe. Studies predict that soon mosquitos carrying tropical diseases like dengue fever and chikungunya will reach Britain. Britain is already thought to be a suitable environment for West Nile Virus and the main carrier species of mosquito was discovered in Kent.

While climate change seems to be helping the distribution of mosquitoes, bats, which are predators of these insects, are being negatively impacted. Bats use echolocation to navigate and locate prey in the dark. Unfortunately, climate change is affecting the volume and clarity of the sound generated by temperate region bats making it harder for them to catch the pest mosquitoes.

And now we must combat these pests in place of the bats.

New developments in LED lightbulbs may lead to customized lights that can deter insects. Artificial lights can attract insects carrying deadly diseases such as mosquitoes and this is a problem in developing countries like Brazil. The United States is taking a bit of a different approach, and of course, it involves drones.

White House officials highlighted a Microsoft project to warn against the spread of insect-borne diseases by robotically stalking mosquitoes. This autonomous system would help detect pathogens in the environment before people were infected.

Along with the drones, Obama is trying to raise awareness of climate change, how it impacts our health, and how to take action to reduce health risks associated with climate change. Negotiating a deal with China to cut greenhouse gases and enacting EPA regulations is another head of the fight against climate change.

However, some Republican lawmakers in Congress don’t feel climate change is a substantial risk. And with climate change consistently polling low among American priorities with doubt the steps Obama is taking to reduce pollution is worth the cost to the economy, sufficient change may come slowly.
